Importance of Cleaning Hull, Propeller, and Underwater Parts Effectively

The reasons for ensuring effective cleaning of these components are numerous:

  1. Efficiency and Speed: Clean hulls and propellers face less resistance (drag) moving through water, improving fuel efficiency and speed.
  2. Fuel Costs: Reduction in drag directly correlates with lower fuel consumption, making operations more economical.
  3. Maintenance Costs: Regular cleaning prevents the long-term accumulation of organisms that can cause deep hull damage and require more extensive repairs.
  4. Environmental Compliance: Lowering fuel consumption lowers also emissions, reducing the environmental footprint.

What is controlled super-cavitation?

Cavitation refers to the formation of vapor bubbles in a liquid through negative pressure causing the liquid to vaporize and form bubbles, without any heat involved.

While cavitation is often an unwanted side-effect (especially in water pumps and propellers), our patented technology harness the cavitation for useful purposes.

Why It’s Effective on Organic Matter

Supercavitation is effective at removing organic matter from underwater surfaces but doesn’t wear the antifouling coating. The technical explanation follows:

  1. Reduction of Pressure: When the pressurized sea water is forced into our special nozzle, its pressure is violently reduced and this forms the sudden expansion of the water and the water instantly vaporizes locally.
  2. Collapse: After a few microseconds, since the conditions that allowed their formation no longer exist, such bubbles will suddently implode.
  3. Shock Waves: The collapse of such cavitation bubbles generates micro-shock waves, exactly as it happens in ultrasonic cleaning.
  4. Selective effect: The cavitation bubbles are small enough to penetrate small grooves and pits on the surface of marine life. The micro-shock waves of the bubble implosion are extremely effective in breaking apart and detaching organic materials adhering to underwater parts, including barnacles, but leaves the antifouling coating almost entirely (99%) unaffected.

What are the benefits for you?

  1. Lifting your Sailing or Motor Yacht carries intrinsic risks and potential fatigue to the hull. Isn’t it wiser to do it only when really needed?
  2. When a quality antifouing is used – such as International Marine Micron 350 – in at least two coats, it will lasts two or even three years. Why removing it only after a season?
  3. By sandpapering the hull every year you raise the risk to damage the gelcoat! Why wasting a lot of money for such time-consuming operation, when you can do it only every two or three seasons?
  4. By using the antifouling effectively, it will be much easier to sandpaper it when you lift the boat, for applying new coats.
  5. The underwater cleaning with our technology takes only some hours and will cost you just a fraction of doing it in the yachtyard. You’ll just need to lift your boat for some hours, in order to service the zinc anodes, check the hull, and service the IPS pods if present.
  6. Keeping your boat in the water allows you to enjoy those beautiful days of nice weather off-season.
